Mechanical testing of structural metallic materials

We provide comprehensive testing of metallic materials, supporting applications across structural, manufacturing and engineering environments.

Our team includes experienced metallurgists with backgrounds in the metals industries, enabling us to deliver accurate testing alongside expert interpretation.

While we have a particular specialism in steel for structural concrete applications, our facilities are capable of testing a wide range of structural metallic materials.

Advanced testing capability across load and performance conditions

Our computer-controlled testing systems are designed to carry out both standard and advanced mechanical tests, including:

  • Tensile
  • Compression
  • Flexural
  • Shear testing

Along with more complex assessments such as fracture toughness.

Flexible programmes for a wide range of requirements

Our test machines are fully programmable, allowing for controlled cyclic loading and strain patterns, with all data captured for detailed analysis.

Our load capacity ranges from 10kN to 1500kN, ensuring suitability for a wide range of sample sizes and test requirements.

We also operate six dedicated fatigue testing machines, with load capacities between 100kN and 400kN. These systems enable complex fatigue testing under controlled loads and frequencies, supporting assessment of material performance over time.

Our process

01

Define

We confirm material type, test requirements and applicable standards.

02

Plan

A testing programme is developed, including load conditions and test methods.

03

Prepare

Samples are prepared in-house, including bespoke fixtures where required.

04

Test

Mechanical and fatigue testing is carried out using calibrated, programmable equipment.

05

Report

Results are analysed and presented clearly to support performance assessment and decision-making.

Flexible testing for standard and bespoke requirements

Because our professional staff all have research experience, we are equally at home developing bespoke or non-standard tests, as well as conducting our wide scope of UKAS accredited tests. We have our own in-house machine shop for the preparation of samples and the manufacture of bespoke test rigs where required. Our testing facilities can easily be integrated into your R&D programmes.

As well as our ambient temperature testing, we are able to conduct tests in environmental chambers at temperatures in the range -70C to +250C. Higher temperature tests in the creep range are outsourced to partner laboratories, but our expertise in specifying test conditions and interpreting results can be invaluable.
